Cardinal Edouard Gagnon, former president of the Pontifical Council for the Family and presently president of the Pontifical Committee for International Eucharistic Congresses, spoke at a Catholics United for Faith conference in the fall of 1993, in which he made an appeal for greater devotion to the Real Presence as a means of keeping the family together. He pointed out that Pope John Paul II is fostering belief in the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist to "save the family." The Cardinal asked the rhetorical question, "Where is Christ?"
In reply: "He is in the Eucharist... in the Mass, in our churches and we have to put the Eucharistic Christ back in our lives... It is the first thing parents should tell their children. It is never too soon to teach your children about the Eucharist... I say it is a duty to tell your child. Their whole life and their eternal life depends on Christ."
We have forgotten that the Catholic Church was recognized everywhere for the presence of God in the Person of Christ in the tabernacle... We should all work to reopen our churches... If the churches are open, the people will come."
