Byzantine Catholic and other Eastern Catholic Churches
Byzantine Catholics (also known as "Greek Catholics") are canonically organized into eparchies (dioceses) and exarchates (mission dioceses). Historically, such jurisdictions had been defined geographically and this is still the norm and the goal. However, as Eastern Catholics emigrated to the Americas from the countries of their spiritual and cultural ancestors, it became apparent that there was a pastoral need for such jurisdictions to be established along ethnic lines.
Ethnically and culturally-based jurisdictions still exist today. This is true even though many parishes are now comprised of people who, culturally, identify firstly as American or Canadian and ethnicity factors far less in parish life then it did a generation or two ago. Such changes have come about through assimilation, intermarriage, integration into parishes of Catholics from the Latin Church, and conversions. However, there remain a sizable number of parishes where historic ethnicity continues to be a significant factor in parish life. Perhaps, someday, Byzantine Catholics will merge into a single ecclesial entity to proclaim the Gospel to peoples of all ethnicities.
Currently, though, geographic boundaries still overlap among the five Byzantine Churches which have a canonical presence in the United States and/or Canada: the Ruthenian, Ukrainian, Melkite, Romanian, and Slovak Byzantine Churches.
Below you will find a complete listing of Byzantine Catholic and other Eastern and Oriental Catholic jurisdictions for North America, as well as limited information on each of the other Byzantine Churches which have a pastoral presence in North America, but for which no hierarchical structure presently exists.
Byzantine Italo-Greek-Albanian:
There is not currently any ecclesiastical structure for Italo-Greek-Albanian Catholics in North America. The exception is that Italo-Greek Catholics in the State of Nevada are canonically subject to the Eparchy of the of the Holy Protection of Mary in Phoenix of the Ruthenians, by reason of the Eparchy's erection of Our Lady of Wisdom Italo-Greek Catholic parish (Las Vegas, NV) to pastorally serve them.
